Over the years I have come across a lot of conflicting information regarding Thomas Dewey's roots in England such as which ship he came to America on, where and when he was born and who his ancestors were. I have failed to find any reference to official records to corroborate this information. However, I have come across several items of hard evidence (mainly parish records) that has led me to conclude that Thomas Dewey, The Settler was born in 1606 at Hinton Martell in the county of Dorset, his father was Thomas (died 1636) and his mother was Mary Moore (died 1637). I believe he sailed from Swanage in Dorset some time prior to 1633. I have a section on a website containing the details behind my theory and the chain of evidence (with references) supporting it.

Thomas Dewey, the colonist ancestor of a large and influential family, become a Puritan dissenter and emigrated to America from Sandwich, Kent, England, with the early settlers under Governor Winthrop and Rev. John Warham.

The records of Massachusetts Bay Colony mention him as early as August, 1633, when he was an inhabitant of Dorchester, and where he was enrolled a freeman, May 14, 1634.

In 1635 he removed to the area of Windsor, Connecticut, where he appears in a list of the settlers in 1640. He held considerable land, served as a juror of the particular court, and seems to have lived an honorable upright life. Thomas is listed on monument to the Founders of the town of Windsor, CT, amended and approved by the Descendants of the Founders of Ancient Windsor, Inc. as of June 1996. (Connecticut Historical Society. Some early records and documents of and relating to the town of Windsor, Connecticut, 1639-1703. Hartford, Conn. : Connecticut Historical Society, 1930. 227 pg. 21).

He married, March 22, 1639, at Windsor, Frances, widow of Joseph Clark. She died September 27, 1690, aged between seventy-five and eighty years.

The statement has been made that Thomas Dewey was from Sandwich, Kent, but this has no documentary foundation. Dewey was more likely from the West Country, as were so many of the other early settlers of Dorchester. Since Thomas Dewey first appears in Dorchester in 1633, he may have arrived on the unnamed ship from Weymouth, Dorsetshire, that landed in New England in July of 1633. He had a land grant in Dorchester, MA, on 1 December 1634 and also on 5 July 1635. His surname in the town records is spelled "Duee." He was early at Windsor, CT, where he was frequently a juror and also became a deputy.

He married Frances, on 22 Mar 1638 in Windsor, Hartford, CT.
