About Col. Thomas Reade

Thomas Reed was baptized in North Benfleet, County Essex, England, on August 15, 1612, the son of Edmund and Elizabeth Read (New England Historic and Genealogical Register, hereafter referred to as the Register, 84:113). He was a juror on September 25, 1630, freeman on April 1634 and an ensign of the militia in 1636. He was granted a 300 acre farm near Governor Endicott's north of Salem on February 16, 1635/36. Thomas Read was listed as head of family in Salem on December 25, 1637 and had three members of the household. We know that Thomas Read had at least one servant because of a subsequent court inquiry regarding the death of William Stark, who had been his servant. There is no evidence that Thomas Read was married while living in Salem. He had returned to England by January 25, 1641/42 when the inquiry into the death of his former servant was held. (Salem, Perley, 2:165) He married Priscilla Banks in London on August 17, 1643 (Register 88:301). He served as a colonel in the Parliamentary Army during the English Civil War and subsequently as governor of Stirling Castle. He appointed his brothers-in-law Samuel Symonds and Daniel Epps as his agents regarding his property in Salem and there is no evidence he ever returned to Salem. In his will dated July 25, 1662 and proved on November 6, 1662, he called himself, "Thomas Read of Wickford, Essex, gentleman", and named his wife Priscilla, daughter Priscilla, son Samuel (who subsequently became a merchant in London) and son Thomas who was then under the age of 21. He also mentioned his "farm called Wickford near Salem in New England".
