About Thomas Southard, Jr.

Thomas received his fathers land, 214 acres in Hempstead, upon his fathers death. It was assumed that he would divide it among his brothers. He apparently did not do so and his brothers petitioned the Courts for intervention, eventually in 1706 a binding recommendation was made. This settlement was to divide the land into thirds. John received the northern third and Thomas the southern third. The central third went to Abraham and Issac together. At that time both Abraham, who did not marry, and their mother was living with Issac. It has been indicated that the family of Thomas and those of his brothers were not friendly during several later generations. Around 1725 most of his family moved to Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY which is about 100 miles up the Hudson river. Some in the family returned to Long Island after the Revolutionary War.

Around 1725 after he was stripped of the right to control distribution of his fathers property around Hempstead, he sold his property and took his family up the Hudson River to Dutchess County.
