About Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge, Sr.,

Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge , the oldest son of Henry & Harriet (Hayes) Trowbridge, was a prominent and upstanding citizen of New Haven. He was a graduate of Partridge's Military Academy in Middletown.

His father, Henry, was a sailor and started the company, "Henry Trowbridge & Son", which engaged in the West Indies trade. After the father's death, Thomas and his three brothers changed the company to "Henry Trowbridge's Sons". Thomas worked faithfully for the company until his death.

He married with CAROLINE HOADLEY on Sept. 11, 1834. She was the dau. of Capt. Simeon Hoadley and Polly Harrison. She was born Apr. 30, 1918. He died May 26, 1887; she died Nov. 30, 1910. Both buried at Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut.

Children were: Thomas R.J., William R.H., Caroline Hoadley (1844-1935), Rutherford (1851-1918), and Emily E.

Thomas also served on the board of several businesses including New Haven Bank, the Hartford & New Haven Railroad Co., The Security Insurance Co., and was secretary & treasurer of Lond Wharf Co. and secretary of Tomlinson Bridge Co.

During the Civil War, he contributed funds to the American government and was a true patriot. He was chosen as candidate for Lt. Governor of Conn. under Hon. William A. Buckingham, but declined the nomination.
