Cass (Bartow), GA, CSA
On December 6, 1861, Cass County, GA, was renamed in honor of Francis S. Bartow. Bartow was an attorney, Confederate States of America political leader, and military officer during the early months of the American Civil War. He was an inaugural representative to the Confederate Provisional Congress, where he led efforts to prepare for the coming war. He was killed on July 21, 1861, at the First Battle of Manassas, becoming the first brigade commander in the Confederate States Army to die in combat.
