About Thomas Wright

Thomas Wright, Sr. operated a gristmill and a weaving house in Culpepper County, Virginia. Thomas and his sons, Thomas, Jr. , Morgan and William migrated to Kentucky around 1782. At that time Kentucky was still part of Virginia. The Land Office Act of May 1779, passed by the Virginia Legislature rewarded land as a bounty for Revolutionary War service. Thomas Wright had served as a captain in Colonel Bird's regiment and thus was awarded 1,093 acres which he claimed on Hardin's Creek and Cartwright Creek on January 30, 1784. He claimed an additional 1,000 acres on June 17, 1785 on Licking Creek, both claims being in what is today Washington County, Kentucky. Although though Thomas Wright, Sr. had substantial land holdings in Kentucky, he chose to return to the family home at Mountain Run, Virginia where he died in 1803. His weaving house is still standing and is occupied. It was enlarged and turned into a residence when fire sometime in the 1790's destroyed the original home.
