Young Ulrich Gualtherus accompanies his father, Ulrich, to Ceylon, as a clerk. This in itself indicates a level of schooling. They live there without interruption, until the death of his father on 26th February 1760.

Age 18

Ulrich Senior dies in Ceylon on 26th February 1760. At this stage, young Ulrich Gualtherus had been promoted to Assistant.
He leaves Ceylon with all his father's possessions and seven slaves, and returns to his mother in Batavia.

Age 24

On 15th November 1765, the ship, Nieuw Rhoon departed Rammekens and arrived at the Cape on 19th March 1766. It departed the Cape on 3rd April 1766. At the Cape, 5 sailors and 3 soldiers died. The ship arrived at it's destination, Batavia, on 12th June 1766. After having arrived at Batavia, the Nieuw Rhoon sailed on to China. Ulrich's rank on starting this stretch was Accountant.

The return journey departed Batavia on 1st February 1767 and arrived in the Cape on 2nd April 1767. It departed the Cape on 4th September 1767 and arrived at it's destination, Texel (The Netherlands) on 7th October 1767

He departed on 20th September 1767 on the ship WILLEM DE VIJFDE, and arrived in the Cape on 18th January 1768. He departed the Cape on 2nd February 1768, and arrived at destination, Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia) on 7th May 1768. His rank on entering service was listed as Book keeper.
After having called at Batavia, the ship sailed on to China.
