About Gautier Walter d'Ewrus (d'Evreux)

Cawley, in his FMG Medieval Lands database, posits Gautier (Walter) as the son of Robert d'Evreux and his wife Herleva (others give his parents as William d'Evreux and Hawise de Lacy, among others). Cawley also states that he was the father of Edward of Salisbury. However, there is a lack of solid documentation for these relationships, so this man remains something of a mystery.

--------------------

According to Burkes Extinct Peerage, the father of Edward of Salisbury was a Norman named Walter from Rosmar in Normandy. But Keats-Rohan says Edward was English with lands through his mother. He could be both.

=========================================

The Earls of Salisbury are sometimes mistakenly assigned the surname "d’Evreux", but it is spurious, arising from confusion over the nickname of a fictitious ancestor, Walter le Ewrus (Walter the Fortunate). The family of the Earls of Salisbury never used the name "d’Evreux", they do not descend from the Norman Counts of Evreux, nor do the later Devereux derive from them. See Cokayne, George (1982). The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct, or Dormant XI. Gloucester England: A. Sutton. p. 373, note (b). ISBN 0-904387-82-8.

explained that my ancestors, Edward of Salisbury and others, had granted the land to found the abbey, and at least one had been buried in the church here. These are the other ancestors I’ve learned were buried at Bradenstoke:

  • ...Walter/Gauthier d’Evreux (de Ewrus) fitzEdward, sheriff of Salisbury, 1100-1147. In 1142, he was the founder of the Augustinian priory of Clack, also known as Bradenstoke Priory or Bradenstoke Abbey. Walter took the habit of a canon in 1147, the year he died.
  • ...Patrick de Chaworth/Chaources, b. 1052, father of Sybil de Chaworth
  • ...Sybil de Chaworth, wife of Walter de Salisbury FitzEdward (buried near the choir)
  • ...Edward d'Evreux of Salisbury, 1060-1130 (buried near the choir)
  • ...(Possibly) Maud FitzHubert, wife of Edward d’Evreux of Salisbury
  • ...(Possibly) Philippa d’Evreux, mother of Edward d’Evreux of Salisbury
  • ...Adela/Elia de Talvas, wife of Patrick, earl of Salisbury (he was buried in Abbey St Hilaire, Poitou after being killed in ambush of Eleanor of Aquitaine). Adela was daughter of Count of Ponthieu.
  • ...John FitzGilbert Marshal, father of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke. See article by Elizabeth Chadwick on John Marshal HERE.
  • ...Sibilla de Salisbury, wife of John FitzGilbert Marshal, and mother of William Marshal
