Died after an accident in the Palmerston North - Ashhurst cycle race.

The front fork of his bicycle broke while descending a hill and he suffered severe head injuries including a facture to the base of his skull that caused his death.

Walter Freeman junr.'s death constituted the first fatality in cycle racing in New Zealand.
