About Walter fitzEdward de Salisbury (d'Évreux), Lord of Salisbury

Walter was Sheriff of Wiltshire.

He was eldest son of Eduuard Saresberiensis (Edward of Salisbury) (by a first wife?). He was of Chitterne in Wiltshire.

Walter was also called Gautier d' Évreux.

Walter controlled the lands of his father in 1120 in Wiltshire. He was founder of Bradenstock Priory.

Walter was our ancestor through two distinct descent lines--through his daughter Sibyl and through his son Patrick, each of whom was independently our ancestor.

========

The Earls of Salisbury are sometimes mistakenly assigned the surname "d’Evreux", but it is spurious, arising from confusion over the nickname of a fictitious ancestor, Walter le Ewrus (Walter the Fortunate). The family of the Earls of Salisbury never used the name "d’Evreux", they do not descend from the Norman Counts of Evreux, nor do the later Devereux derive from them. See Cokayne, George (1982).
