About Wealthy Shumway

Wealthy Eddy was a participant in most of the major events in the early days of the Mormon Church: Kirkland, Missouri, Nauvoo, the prophet's murder, Winter Quarters, crossing the plains, and the Mountain Meadow Massacre.

A descendant of 1620 Mayflower pilgrims who landed at Plymouth. Born in Salon, Somerset County, Maine, March 24, 1810 to John Fuller Eddy and Rhoda Eddy. Both her mother's maiden name and her father's last name was Eddy because they were first cousins.

She ran off to join the Mormon Church at the age of 20 against her parents wishes. She married Stephen Billings Shumway from Massachusetts who was also a Mormon. Stephen and Wealthy had 3 children; Clarissa (died as a baby), Ammi Warren, and Mary Amanda (10/18/1838). Stephen died of appendicitis in 1839/1840 in Nauvoo leaving Wealthy a widow with two small children.

Wealthy married William Dickinson Pratt in March 1841. He was the older brother of Parley and Orson Pratt. William and Wealthy had four children: Martha (died at age 5), William Jared (my GGpa), Stephen (died at 5 months), and Mirza Lyona (died at 1.5 yrs). Wealthy was pregnant and chose to stay behind while William helped the first exodus of Saints leave Nauvoo. William returned to Nauvoo in October of 1847 but disappeared from Wealthy's life from that point on. Mirza Lyona was born in 1848. She was sealed to Stephen Billings Shumway, in 1848.

She crossed the plains without a husband with three young children Ammi, Mary, and William. She settled in Payson, Utah. In 1854 at the age of 44 she married William Cornwell Patten and they had one child, Sarah Wealthy Patten. Both Ammi and Mary died before Wealthy so she helped raise their children. Her son William Jared Pratt and daughter Sarah Wealthy Patten survived her when she died at age 82 in 1892 in Parker, Idaho.
