On May 13, 1939 The S.S. St. Louis sailed from the port of Hamburg Germany to Havana Cuba with just under 1000 Jewish refugees trying to escape Nazi Germany after experiencing the Night of Broken Glass just 6 months earlier. They had landing visas but the new Cuban government nevertheless did not let them disemmbark. The ship was turned back to Europe and the passengers were allowed off in four countries: England, France, Holand and Belgium only, the 3 later ones soon got occupied by Germany and most refugees ended up in the gas chambers.
