About William Brown Cozzens

As a young man, William Brown Cozzens was introduced by his older brother Issachar to Abraham Martling who was the keeper of Martlingʼs Tavern, the inn on lower Broadway in New York where the Tammany Society held itʼs meetings.

While working for Martling, William B. met his daughter, a widow named Sarah Martling Evener. In 1810, Sarah and William B. were married, and their son, Abraham Martling Cozzens, was born in 1811. Another son, Henry Rutgers Cozzens was born in 1813, but he died while still an infant. Sarah also died in 1813, possibly from complications due to child birth.

William B. Cozzens married his second wife Jane Davidson in 1816, and young Abraham M. Cozzens was brought up with the children of that marriage, at West

Point. In 1833, when he was 22, he married Marion Anne Curtis (1817 -1846 ) and they had six children, Anna Louise, 1835 - 1840; Thomas Moore, 1837 - 1888;

Francis Hamilton 1839 - 1919; William Dean, 1841 - ?; Adele, 1843 - 1903; and Edward Carey, 1845 - 1911.
