About William Cambridge Eager (Augur)

William Eager, our immigrant ancestor, was one of the proprietors of the

Ockoocanganset Plantation purchased of the Indians by order of the

General Court, May 3rd, 1654. It contained about 6000 acres. As the

town of Sudbury, of which Marlborough was an outgrowth increased in

population this Indian Reservation became partially surrounded by the

town. After King Philip's War the number of Indians was greatly

diminished, and the plantation was purchased from those remaining by a

group of settlers. this, our William Eager, had come to Marlborough,

Mass., about 1682 and died there April 4, 1690. His marriage and his

interest in the purchase of the Indian tract, indicated that he was a man

of some standing, and I have, therefore, been surprised not to find any

record of his admission to citizenship or his activity in public affairs.

The record of his Scottish ancestry probably explains this. If he was a

Scotch Presbyterian he was of course not eligible as long as he retained

his membership. A brief summary giving a bird's eye view of our Eager

Line: Mrs. Susie Eager Trotter William Eager, our Immigrant Ancestor,

came to America in 1630. The original 'lists of Person of Quality' by

Hutten says: 'The Winthrope Fleet, 1630, consisted of eleven vessels and

seven hundred passengers.' Wm. Ager, (Nazing, Essex, England), was one of

the passengers. This William Eager immigrated to Plymouth, Mass., thence

to Cambridge, Mass, from Wales about A.D. 1630. His Father was English,

according to tradition, and settled on his estate in Ireland, as

previously stated in this book. John Savage in his 'Genealogical

Directory of England' says our first William, father of our immigrant

William, came from London.
