I William Goodwin sen. of Hartford do make this my last Will & Testament: I give to my wife Susannah Goodwin that part of my Home. lott & House, or Houseing upon it, not given to my son Nathaniel, during the term of her natural life; and also I give her liberty to make Sale of the Same for her maintenance if need so require, to be offered first to my son Nathaniel Goodwin or his heirs before it be disposed to any others. Also, I give to my wife all my Moveable Estate that I stand possessed of at my decease, unless it be one Cow, she paying my just Debts & Legacy given to my daughter Susannah Goodwin at my decease. Also, I give to my wife 20 Shillings per year, to be paid by my son William Goodwin or his heirs during the term of her natural life; and 20 Shillings per year more, to be paid her yearly by my son Nathaniel Goodwin or his heirs for the Improvement of my 2 acres of Meadow Land east side of the Great River in Hartford. I give unto my son William Goodwin the house & Homelott that was formerly my Uncle John Morrises, he paying 20 Shillings per year to his Mother (if she do see Cause to demand it) during her natural life. I give to my son William Goodwin all my Upland on the East side of the Connecticut River which abbutteth upon Sergt. Nathaniel Goodwin's Land South, and upon Richard Gilman's Land North. I give to my son Nathaniel Goodwin the remaining part of my House & Homelott in Hartford not already given unto him, after my decease, or the decease of my wife (if she hath not need to sell it for her maintenance). Also, I give unto my son Nathaniel Goodwin 2 acres of Meadow Land on the East side of the Connecticut River, he paying 20 Shillings per year to his Mother during her life, and paying £5 unto his sister Susannah Pratt within one year after the decease of his Mother. I also give unto my daughter Susannah Pratt one Cow. I hereby make my wife Susannah Goodwin sole Executrix.

-------------------- William testified in September 3, 1674 that he was 45 years old. The court case was between William Goodwin and a Lt. John Stedman. It dealt with Lt. Stedman taking hay which stood between stones and a brook. This case is documented in Volume 1 of Private Controversies, Connecticut State Library.

William was made freeman by the General Court on May 21, 1657. He was appointed chimney-viwer in 1662, 1665, and 1671. The town voted December 29, 1676 that William Goodwin should sweep the meeting house and ring the Bell Sabbaths and at public meetings of the town or side, and at 9 o'clock. He was to be paid 7 pounds annually. He also dug graves and warn of public meetings.

William's wife's maiden name and the date of the marriage is not known. His will lists his "loving wife, Susana." It is known that she had a sister Sarah Fruen who was betrothed to Thomas Greenhill. When William was about 40 years old, he testified about h is acquaintance with Sarah Fruen's betrothed. He also testified the 2 were to be married when becoming of age, but Thomas died before marrying or consummating the marriage. This is documented in Private Controversies --------------------
