About William Peter Hallock
Long Island Genealogies By Mary Powell Bunker
Tradition says that Peter1 Hallock came with twelve other heads of families to New Haven in 1640; same season crossed the sound and landed at Southold, Peter being the first to step on shore at a spot still called Hallock1s Neck. Also, that having bought a large tract of land of the Indians, he went back to England for his family. Wife was unwilling to come, but Peter promised to give her two daughters (by a former husband) considerable land, and the family all came over in two or three years; meantime the Indians had resold his land, and another party had possession. The records of this period are lost. In 1654, according to Southold records, Wm.2 Hallock was in possession of a large property there, and was quite a man of business in the town. He died in 1688 or 1689. Will makes his wife Margaret executrix. The children named in the will were :
John3 1679 m. Abigail Sweezey, dau. of John, he d. at Westbury 25, 5, 1737.
Thomas,3 Mary,3 Martha,3 Sarah.3, Peter,3 William, wife named Mary.
Elisabeth3 m. 1st Harrud, m. 2d 1675 Richard Howell.
Abigail3 m. David Horton.
The Sweezey1s were Friends from Salem, Mass., and Wm. Hallock, who was a strong Church of England man, disinherited his son John, and any others of the family to all time, if they married or contracted with any Quaker or any son or daughter of a Quaker. Years afterwards a grandson of this disinherited John Hallock who lived in Westchester county gave very small portions to any of his children who married those not Quakers.

-------------------- Notes for William Hallock:
William Hallock was the only son of the original Peter Hallock. He was Peter's son by his first wife, who died in England. William was born in England between 1610 and 1618. He died in Aquebogue, or West Mattituck as it is now known, in 1684. His burial place is not known. He married Margaret Howell, daughter of the widow Howell (who later married William's father Peter) . Margaret accompanied William to Southold, Long Island, upon his second visit.
William and Margaret settled on the land purchased by his father, Peter, in what is now West Mattituck, Long Island. He wills the land where he lives to his two sons, Thomas and Peter; to his son, William, land near Southold; and to his son John, land in Wading River. He is greatly displeased with John because he married a "Quakeress" and joined the Society of Friends.
It has been mentioned that William was born in Hingham, Norfolk, England but no reliable source is now known.
William's will was recorded on February 19, 1681 or 1682 in Southold township.
His will was probated on October 21, 1684.

~MY ANCESTOR~ The son of PETER HALLOCK, and his first wife, he probably came to New England with his father as an adult, although this has been questioned. His wife, Margaret (Howell), resided in Aquebogue (West Mattituck) on the land purchased by his father or as some say, his father had little to do with the procurement of this land. He was one of the first twelve in Mattituck during the old Aquebogue division of the land from Southold to Mattituck Creek and ran from Peconic Bay on the south to the Long Island Sound on the north, receiving two lots (about 400 acres). This is suppose to be the land that his father purchased from the Indians which makes the legend of Peter Hallock questionable. He gave his son-in-law, Richard Howell, a strip along the future town line from the Bay to the Sound, 150 acres. William Hallock purchased from Thomas Mapes in 1667, the original homelot of John Tucker and lands to the north in Southold Village. His estate in 1675 was valued at 361 pounds & 10 shillings.
William Hallock (spelled Halliok in documents) left a large personal estate in 1684. His will was dated Feb. 10, 1682 and proved October 21, 1684 leaving property to his wife, four sons & five daughters. To sons, Thomas & Peter, the farm where he lived -- Thomas the western half except for the swamp lot & Peter the eastern half including the swamp & his dwelling house; to son, William he left land near Southold; to John land on Wading River (John's wife was a Quakeress, something that greatly displeased John's father). The daughters named in his will were: Margaret, Martha, Sarah, Elizabeth, & Abigail.
