William was the son of Eppy Ditus Hawkins and Emeline (Emily) Bond. He was educated at Weaubleau Christian College in Hickory County, MO, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Missouri. In the early 1900's William was president of the State Normal School at Warrensburg, MO.
William married Lucy F. Garrett on Aug., 14, 1879 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. They had four children: Clyde G., Maud R., Carl Leon and Ruth S.
