Death: Dec. 6, 1908 Natrona County Wyoming, USA

DEATH OF W. H. CHENEY Old-Time Resident of Freeland Passes to Great Beyond. Died, at his home in Freeland, on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6, at 2:20, William H. Cheney, aged 68 years and 10 months. The sad news was not unexpected, for he has been a sufferer from cancer of the stomach for many months, and he and his many friends realized last summer that the end was not far off, and he would soon be called to join the silent majority. And thus it is, another is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers. A few weeks ago Mr. Huntley was called, last week it was Mr. Cantlin; this week it is Mr. Cheney, and next week it may be another of our sturdy pioneers. It must be so; yet these tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang in the breast of many friends and the near and dear relatives.

William Heath Cheney was born at North Groton, N. H., on January 29, 1840; he came to Wyoming in April, 1889, and settled on a ranch in the Freeland country, where he has lived ever since; he was one of the many prosperous ranchers in that section. He is survived by one son, Mr. Albert G. Cheney, who is 41 years of age and is a resident of Freeland, and he comforted his father during his long sickness and was with him at the time of his death. Mrs. Cheney died on March 7, 1900. Mr. Cheney was a Blue lodge Mason, being raised to a Master Mason by Mount Prospect lodge, No. 69, at Ashland, N. H., on April 18, 1864. He dimited from that lodge and was a charter member of Casper lodge No. 15, when it was organized in October, 1893. It was his special request that the Masonic services be conducted at his interment, and about twenty members from Casper were in attendance at the funeral, which occurred at the Freeland school house at 10:30 Tuesday morning, and the Masonic ritualistic services were conducted at the school house and at the grave. The remains were laid tenderly beside the body of his departed and beloved wife, in the Freeland cemetery just at high twelve. Following is a list of the Masons in attendance: E. D. Norton, P. C. Nicolaysen, C. M. Hawks, A. J. Moklor, G. T. Morgan, C. H. Townsend, W. A. Blackmore, J. J. Svendsen, O. M. Rice, G. W. Breon, J. T. Kingdon, H. Mendelsohn, M. C. Keith, Harold Banner, G. W. Johnson, R. A. Clark, J. G. White, John Tobin and Wm. Kennedy. Source: Natrona County Tribune, Casper, Wyoming, 9 Dec 1908, Page 1
