November 16 1826, Wynberg, Cape. William writes to Honourable Major Richard Bourke, Lieutenant Governor and Commander of the forces at the Cape of Good Hope. It is a very faded handwritten document, the following is a precis:
He served in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders for nearly 14 years and was discharged therefrom in 1817 with out receiving any pension or benefit. He has since carried on his business as a tailor for the support of his wife and large family. His wife mary died on September 30 1826 in 'Child Bed', that infant is still living. As a result he is left with a child and six young children totally unprovided for & quite unprepared & incapable of taking care of themselves. Requests a position in the police or other in any of the country districts.
