About William Adams Hickman, Jr.

There has been unnecessary doubt about his brief life. Beadle's biography of Bill Hickman says that Hickman's second wife Sarah Luce went to Salt Lake in the Amasa Lyman Company of 1848, while Hickman himself spent 1848 at Winter Quarters in Iowa. When Hickman arrived in Salt Lake he discovered that his wife had given birth to a son who was not his. (Hickman 1872, 48).

The Hickman family website says, "Sarah [Luce] arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in the Summer of 1847 in the 2nd Company led by LDS Apostle Amasa Lyman. She gave birth to a child in Salt Lake in the spring of 1849. Although married to William A. Hickman at the time, he never claimed the child as his because he had remained in Winter Quarters Iowa through the year 1848." (Hickman family website, visited 15 Dec. 2009).

This information erroneously suggests the child was born in 1849. However, a contemporary record, the diary of Patty Bartlett Sessions places the child's birth on 9 February 1850. Cemetery records place his birth a few days later, on 14 February 1850.

Doubt about the child's paternity is probably accurate, although misdated. Sarah Luce traveled in the Amasa Lyman Company of 1848, not 1847 (Hickman 1872, 48). Hickman arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 20 August 1849 (Hickman 1872, 53-54). A child born the following February was probably not his.

Finally, the child's name has been mis-reported. Luce genealogist Martha McCourt calls him Jason Luce Hickman (McCourt, 972). However, she confuses the events of his life with those of his uncle Jason Luce, so it seems this is a simple confusion of identities. According to the diary of Patty Bartlett Sessions, the child was named William Adams Hickman, Jr. (Hickman family website, visited 15 Dec. 2009). He died 20 May 1854. Salt Lake City Cemetery records call him William A. Child Hickman.
