About William MacKay, of Borley

Ilia. Captain William of Borley, a zealous Royalist, led a company of Mackays at the battle of Worcester, was appointed a commissioner of supply for the shire of Sutherland by the Parliament of 1685, and also by that of 1691.

He m. Elizabeth, dau. of Alexander Corbet of Arkboll, Ross, with issue three sons and five daus. : —

i. Captain Hugh, of whom follows.

ii. Donald, whose connection with the Darien expedition we described in our memoir of the 3rd Lord Reay, pp. 173-4.

Hi. Rev. John, of Lairg, of whom afterwards as IVb.

iv. Elizabeth, m., first, the Hon. Charles Mackay of Sandwood (See Sandwood Mackays), secondly, Robert Neilson Aberach Mackay (See Abeeach Mackays), and thirdly, John Grey of Rhine, Rogart, who gave her sasine in life-rent of the lands of Rhine in virtue of their contract of marriage, 2nd December, 1707.

v. Barbara, m. Hector Mackay of Skerray (See Strathy Mackays).

vi. Christina, m. Hugh Munro of Achany, and had sasine of Achany, etc., in life-rent, 3rd February, 1691.

vii. Isobell, m. John Mackay of Melness (See Melness Mackays).

Captain William Mackay of Borley," married a daughter of Corbet of Arboll in Ross : issue three sons,

  • 1st, Captain Hugh of Scowry;
  • 2nd, Donald, a member of the Darien council, who was lost at sea, unmarried ; and,
  • 3d the Rev. John Mackay,minister, first of Durness, and afterwards of. Lairg ;

and five daughters,

  • 1st, Elizabeth, who married, 1st, the Honourable Charles Mackay of Sandwood ; 2dly, Robert Mackay of Moudale ; and 3dly, John Gray of Rhine ;
  • 2d, Barbara, who married Hector Mackay of Skcmay; 34 Christian, married to Hugh Munro of Achanny ;
  • 4th, Isobel, married to John Mackay of Melness ; and
  • 5th, Jane, married to Murdocb, eldest son of Robert Mackay of Achness.

Captain William led a company of the Mackay at the battle of Worcester on the side of Charles 11. He died in 1703, aged 74.
