William Mendenhall, son of James Mendenhall and Mary Holton, was born February 7, 1778 and died the same year. The next child born, also a son, was named William in his memory. William Mendenhall was born December 17th. 1778, at Chipping, Sodbury. In 1796 he went to Jamaica, remaining there one year on a sugar plantation. In 1798 boarded Frigate La Heba as clerk until March 30th, 1800, when he taught school at Forscot and Bacham four years. In 1800 he returned to Bath and opened an academy there. In 1805 he married Anna Wood. He was the correspondent of the American family and collected the material for the first pedigree that was completed by Edward, of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which a great part of the early part of this history was secured. To William and Anna were born thirteen children, of whom 6 did not live to maturity:
