William Henry Musgrove was born in Georgia to Nancy Tate and John William Musgrove, who moved to South Carolina the year after his birth. The family moved to Cocke County, TN, in 1807, and William Henry Musgrove moved to Alabama in 1818. He was a school teacher, and served 6 terms in the Alabama legislature, beginning in 1828. He led a company to the Creek frontier in 1836, and was called Colonel Musgrove from his militia service. He married Sarah "Sallie" Fowler, daughter of Rev. John Fowler. In 1856 Musgrove was ordained a minister, at Mount Tabor Baptist Church.

He organized Company C, Avalanche Company. After Capt. Musgrove died of typhoid fever at Pensacola, Florida, John M. Hanna assumed command of the company.
