About Capt. William E. Nye

He became Inspector of Ships for the Army and Navy transport service. The Spanish American war found him in command of the transport McClelIan in Cuban waters. He also served as Captain of the U. S. Army Transports Meade and Sumner. After the war. he took official delegations of Congress, the Army and the Navy to Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines on inspection tours for President Theodore Roosevelt.

He was a member of Social Harmony Lodge, A. F. &A. M., Wareham, Mass., Sandy Hook Pilot's Association, and the Arctic Club of America.

In 1878, at the age of sixteen, he went to sea as an able seaman on the first voyage of the whaling ship Wanderer out of New Bedford. He sailed from New York to San Francisco on the ship Francis and made several long whaling voyages out of San Francisco on the Gazelle and the Atlantic. He sailed on almost every body of water in the world, went as far north as the 750 parallel in the Arctic and rounded Cape Horn seven times.
