About William Pepperell

The Pepperell Family Tree

Researched by Valerie Ellis (Cooke) 15 April 1994

F. Apart from the eldest, John, who married and moved to Chivelstone, the boys of this generation remained at Stokenham and raised their families there. William, was able to support his wife Grace and eight children at Stokenham so presumably had a good livelihood there. The Enclosure Acts and Industrial Revolution had not yet put an end to cottage industries and common grazing rights. Their second daughter, named Joyce after her father’s dead baby sister, gave birth to an illegitimate son christened “Andrew Lamble” in 1775 when she was twenty-four years old, but little is known of the others. Nicholas married at Sherston and took to wandering the parishes. This was usual for agricultural labourers whose work was either seasonal or who were hired annually at hiring fairs.
