About William Prater

William Prater was the son of Robert Franklin Prater and wife Cynthia Ann Rice. He was born in 1843 in Morgan County, Kentucky. He moved with his family to Missouri in 1865. William married Sarah B. Hastings and had four children. He served in the US Army, Company M 12th MO Cavalry, but was discharged after a six-month stay in the hospital. Family lore says he contracted tuberculosis. William died January 14, 1880, in McDonald County, Missouri. He was buried in the Pineville Cemetery, McDonald County, Missouri.

According to the National Park Service's database of Civil War soldiers, a William Prater did serve in the Civil War with the US Army's 12th Missouri Cavalry. The database reports that this unit lost only 36 men to battle but lost 227 to disease. Of interest, there was also a Confederate 12th Missouri Cavalry, but no William Prater is listed as serving in that unit. This confirms that William served on the Union side.

Children of William Prater and wife Sarah Hastings:

  • Rachel Alice Emerson (1869-1953), married Leslie Combe Emerson, and moved to Oklahoma
  • William Jerett Prater (1872-1930)
  • Henry Archibald Prater (1874-after 1930)
  • John Robert Prater (1880-?)
