About William H Randall

Information from his Civil War papers.

William enrolled in service January 23, 1864, at Hartwick, NY and was discharged on June 21, 1865. He was mustered in Elmira, NY and sent to the 161 NY Volunteers. He was delayed at camp distribution, New Orleans, LA on March 23, 1864.

William was injured in a skirmish near Spanish Fork, AL, gunshot wound to the left hand. He was sent to a hospital in Fort Gaines, AL, and later to a US hospital in Bucks county, PA. Prior to that, he had also been admitted to a hospital with a fever on Sept 25, 1864, and returned to duty on Oct 1 at White River Landing. This illness was later prescribed as sunstroke, by Lemuel Gleason, Cynthia's brother.

Due to the effects of his injuries and illness during the war, William was unable to do much work after his discharge, and Cynthia had to take in washing to supplement the pension income.

Cynthia apparently stays at the home of her parents during the time William was away at war.

After William's death, his sons Truman and Curtis signed an affidavit regarding Cynthia's need for pension money. They appeared before a notary in Cheming county. Truman's address at that time was Cleveland, OH. Curtis was from Dallas county in Iowa.

William died 20 Sept 1898, at 1046 Walnut St, Elmira, NY, at age 71 years, 11 mo, 2 days. Occupation farmer, born in Broome county, NY, buried in Woodlawn cemetary. He was about 6ft tall, blue eyes, sandy hair. Cause of death, uremic poisoning (kidney disease).
