About William Shappee

William (almost always known as Bill) was born in Casco Township and owned a farm there that was adjoining the Shappee farm where he grew up. The home was formerly the Cherry Glenn Resort. He served in World War II. After his war service he worked on the Max Radseck farm for about a year. Then he went to work for the Barden Brothers fruit farm, where he worked for 25 years. He retired in 1969.

This is an early photo of the Shappee farm. It is undated, but possibly taken around 1930-1935. It was taken as part of an appraisal for improvements, including green shutters. There is a larger, intact copy of this photo in the possession of the current owners of the property.

Photos taken during a family occasion. I estimate the year as 1917 owing to Frances, who looks around two years old. I love the Indian headdress on Jonnie; he used to call himself "The Chief" when I was a child. Notice the bare feet.

The family's cows were taken to "The Flats" and brought home daily. The Flats was a piece of land along the Black River, close to Hawkhead Road. The Shappees had an impressive team of horses. These photos are undated, so I have estimated the time period. The photos were mostly taken by Jonathan Shappee.
