History:

William came to Scotland where he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1840.

He married 20 Apr 1842 in Glasgow, Scotland to a Sarah Bell who also joined the church in 1840.

William and Sarah left for America in 1843 on the ship Yorkshire from Liverpool, England to New Orleans, Louisiana where they boarded a steamship up river to Nauvoo, Illinois. William's life in Nauvoo is not well documented.

He received his patriarchial blessing and was sealed into the lineage of Robert Blashell Thompson and Mercy Rachel Fielding and thereafter went by the name of William McMillan or M. Thompson. Robert Blashell Thompson had died in 1841 and he may have never known William. Mercy Fielding Thompson was a widow who was put into William's care until her marriage to her sister's husband, Hiram Smith. William always lived with or near her.

William was called to be the clerk of the 1st hundred of the Heber C. Kimball Company leaving Winter Quarters for the Salt Lake Valley in 1848. Mercy went with an earlier company. Her sister, Mary Fielding Smith, and brother, Joseph Fielding, traveled with William's company.

William went into plural marriage with Ann Green and Emma Price. William left the church in 1862 and went to California. He then migrated to Leavenworth County, Kansas where he died in 1890.
