Veteran of War of 1812. William S. Zornes served as Private, 106th Regiment, 10th Regiment (Boswells) Kentucky Militia, Capt. John Phillip's Company. Served in the Sandusky, Ohio, Lake Erie area, during the Battle of Lake Erie, also Fort Malden, Upper Canada, 1814. He served on Lake Erie with Commodore Perry, when they defeated the British. Noted as superior marksman and sharpshooter (Kentucky militia were used as shipboard marines to shoot officers and gun crews of British ships). Discharged in Seneca. His records are in the National Archives in Washington, D. C.

He owned a lumber mill in Lewis Co., KY.

He was an early landowner in Rush County, Indiana with Patent #2859 signed by Pres. John Quincy Adams.
