About Emma des Francs

Ymme, second wife of Eadbald might have been a Frankish princess. She bore him two sons, Eormenred and Eorcenberht, and a daughter, Eanswith.

Her identity is problematic. Eadbald is said to have married a daughter of the Frankish king. She is generally thought to have been the daughter of Clothar II, the sole king of the Franks at the time of their marriage (about 618). However, K. F. Werner argued that she was a daughter of Erchinoald, a Mayor of the Palace, based on the apparent transmission of the 'erchin' name-element among her descendants.

Assuming that she was the daughter of Clothar II, there is no record to identify her mother. Settipani suggests on chronological grounds that she must have been the daughter of Chlothar's first wife, Adaltrudis (La Prehistoire des Capetiens, 98 and n. 382). In contrast, ES makes her the probable daughter of Chlothar but by his second wife, Beretrudis (ES I.1:2).

Finally, there is some question about her given name. The only evidence comes from a forged charter purporting to have been issued by Eadbald.
