Zebulon P Lee enlisted in Co C, 23rd TN Infantry, CSA serving alongside his brothers, Lawson Watkins Lee (killed at the Battle of Bean Station, TN) and Philander Jackson Lee (who also survived the war and returned to Dekalb county). He was shot in the right knee at the Battle of Chickamauga (GA) on 20 September 1863 and the leg was amputated. He was the County Court Clerk of Dekalb County, TN serving 3 terms, 1878 to 1886 and again from 1890 to 1894 and served briefly as the Deputy Court Clerk of Putnam County, TN. He was first buried at Cannady Cemetery in Smithville, TN, where his parents and other family are buried, but upon the death of his wife, his children moved him to Cookeville to be buried alongside her.

Capt. Z. P. Lee died at his home in Nashville Monday morning at 9:45, Oct. 14, 1912. Capt. Lee was 69 years of age and is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. R. L. Jennings of Statesville, Mrs. Frank Richmond of Cookeville, Dr. Harry Lee of Spivey, Mrs. R. E. Potter of Cookeville, Mrs. J. C. Read of Pueblo, Col., Portia Lee of Monterey, Mrs. C. W. Carrol of Chicago, Mrs. Nora Lee Jones and R. E. Lee of Nashville. Prayers were held at the residence Monday evening, at 7:30 o'clock by Dr. G. A. Lofton. The remains were forwarded to Smithville, Tenn., over the Tennessee Central Railroad Tuesday morning. Capt. Lee lived in Cookeville for several years where he has many friends who will regret to hear of his death.

The Smithville Review, 17 Oct 1912:

Capt. Z. P. Lee, a confederate veteran and a former Dekalb Countian, died at his home in Nashville, Monday after an illness lasting over two months. The remains were brought to Smithville Tuesday evening and burial took place Wednesday afternoon after funeral services at the Baptist Church conducted by Elders Davenport and Wauford.
