I'm always interested to hear of people who were baptised "Vans Agnew" as quite a few were. I suppose some may be simply in tribute to the family at Barnbarroch, from people who worked for them or indeed with them in India or somewhere. In some cases it's possibly a sign that the child was an illegitimate son - but Robert didn't have any other illegitimate children that I'm aware of anyway he died in 1809. (His mother-in-law was a friend of the poet, Robert Burns - any connection there?) BUT his grandson Robert (1817-1893) almost certainly did have illegitimate children and the first could have been in 1833! He was described, in his death entry, as a retired butler, aged 83, widower of Jessie Boswell, and the son of James Burns, wood forester, and Sabina Mc Qualter, both deceased.
