About Lovre "Lawrence" Cvitano Petričević

ref: Tarara by Senka Božić'Vrbančić, p108, quote from dtr Dame Mira Szaszy. re: Intermarriages In 1903, My father, along with the others arrived in Auckland, travelled on to Mangonui and joined the gumdiggers at Lake Ohia. The little information he imparted about those early days was that they landed without food, or idea where or how they would be housed. However, the maori took them in, feeding and housing them until they learnt how to build raupo huts. He married Makareta Raharuhi, from the Ngati Kuri tribe, learnt her language and produced 8 children. After my mother died, he married another maori woman and had two sons to her. He also learnt to speak english, as this was required to conduct business. As a Croatian, Lovre found himself in the middle of a hierarcical scale. He was paid more than a maori gumdigger but less than the British. Refer to" From Distant Villages" by Stephen Jelicich pp275 and 276. For an additional life story. He became a respected elder in the community (Kaumatua) He was buried in Ahipara Marae, a signal of honour for a European.
