About John Austin Mollett

1820 Settler - Member of Crause's Party on the Nautilus

-------------------------------------------

John Austen Mollett, at the time of his death, was the printer and editor of the “Cape Times”. It is believed that this newspaper first appeared on 1 Jan 1840. He operated out of 5 Hout Street, Cape Town - from the printing business called Brink, Mollett, Roubaix and Keeve, also known as Brink, Mollett & Co. ('Mollett' in the company's name refers to his father Samuel John Mollett.) This ‘Cape Times’ is not related to the modern day Cape Times’ – a daily newspaper in Cape Town.

Both John Austen and his wife Johanna Dorothea died in 1840. He died 9 weeks before the birth of his son George Pike and she 5 days after. It is likely that both were victims of the smallpox epidemic that ravaged Cape Town in 1840.

It is likely that the four orphans were adopted by a George James PIKE, a printer and likely a friend of Samuel John Mollett Snr. and John Austen.
