Mr John Haggan was born to a seafaring family in Belfast around 1879 [1].
Haggan served with the artilliary in the Boer war.
He initially signed-on to the Titanic in Belfast for the delivery trip to Southampton. When he signed-on again, in Southampton, on 6 April 1912 he gave his address as the Sailors' Home, (Southampton). His last ship had been the Braehead [2]. As a fireman he received monthly wages of £6.
Haggan survived the sinking, possibly on boat 3 [2].
John Haggan returned to England on the Lapland shortly after the Carpathia arrived in New York City.
He died in Belfast on 13 January 1952, aged 73. He never married.
Notes 1. The Belfast agreement gives his name as 'J. Hagan' aged 30, the Southampton agreement as 'J. Haggan' aged 35. The year of birth calculated from the death certificate is 1879 so he was probably 32 or 33 in 1912. 2. The Belfast agreement spells as 'Bray Head'. 3. Colonel Gracie clearly states that the 'J. Hagan' he reports a being on collapsible B with him was not to be confused with Fireman 'J. Haggan'. The US Senate crew list gives the last name as 'Haggan'. The 'Hagan' Colonel Gracie referred to was one of those taken to St Vincent's hospital (it is possible that he meant James McGann).
