(103) James, second Duke of Atholl, third son of John (No. 102 below), born 28th September 1690 ; died 8th January 1764. He was Lord Privy Seal for Scotland, and was M.P. for Perthshire 1715-24. In 1736, on the death of his kinsman, James, tenth Earl of Derby, he succeeded in right of his grandmother (see No. 101) to the sovereignty of the Isle of Man and to the English Barony of Strange, created 1628. He married, first, 28th April 1726, Jane, daughter of Thomas Frederick, who died 13th June 1748, having had:

• 103(a) John Murray, born 12th September 1728; died 23rd April 1729.
• 103(b) James Murray, born 28th March 1735 ; died 12th February 1736. He married, second, 11th May 1749, Jean, daughter of John Drummond of Megginch, but had no issue by her. He was succeeded by his nephew
