-------------------- From notes from Elizabeth Smith, ESmith@Montgomery.k12.ky.us:

I've located some info on James French. I remembered that I had seen it at

the Montgomery Co., KY library and found it in a notebook of genealogy

articles written by Harry W. Mills and published in the Mt. Sterling

Advocate. He wrote about this family several times, so I will try to

summarize what I found.

The immigrant ancestor of the family was a James French, who came to VA from

North of Ireland and became a big tobacco plantar in Prince William and

Stafford Counties. He died in 1743. Wife's name was Elizabeth & children

were William and Mary Ann.

William French was a soldier in colonial wars. He married Winifred Hall,

daughter of Stephen & Catherine (Leasure) Hall & their children were:

Elizabeth, Susanna, Mary (who married a Beatty), Margaret (who married John

Farrow of Culpeper Co., VA, JAMES (Yes, this is the guy we all want to know

about. He married Keziah Calloway--more on them later), William, Stephen,

and Keziah (who married Valentine Stone).

also:

I read somewhere that when this area was first being settled , in order to

encourage settlement and discourage Indian attacks , Twelve men, including

James French were given land to clear and inprove, providing they would

keep only a portion and sell the other to other settlers for a dollar. I

will try to look this up later. I think it was in In Search of Morgans

Station, by Harry Enoch. I will check.

I'm researching the following families from Prince William County, Virginia. I descend from William McCarty born possibly in Prince William County. His parents were Thaddeus McCarty and Sarah Elizabeth Richardson. Thaddeus McCarty was the son of Dennis McCarty and Sarah Ball. I would like to have any information about the family of William French. His will was probated in 1790 in Prince William County, Va. His

son Stephen French appears as exec. on several wills in Prince William County. William's children were James, Mary, Margareitt, Kezia, Elizabeth, Susannah, and Stephen French. Who were the parents of William French. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
