HISTORY OF ILFRACOMBE.
Ilfracombe was originally called Wellshot after the famous station headquarters 60 kilometers south of the town but this was changed in 1890. Wellshot station is entered in the Guinness Book of records for having the largest number of sheep on a single station (460,000 in 1892).
The town came into prominence as a shipping point for the railway and was "the end of the line" until 1892. The line was opened to traffic on 14/9/1891, putting an end to the era of the great wagon haul to and from the coast.
Ilfracombe lays claim to the first motorised mail service in Australia which operated between the towns of Ilfracombe and Isisford in 1910.
Pop was shearer in his working life in and around Barcaldine, Queensland.
On December 26, 1918 he married Ethel May Austin and they had 5 children, whose names were/are:
Mary Grace
Veronica May
John Thomas (my father)
Elma Stella
Frederick Keith aka Uncle Keith
Fred passed away on August 23, 1968 in Barcaldine and is buried in Barcaldine Cementery.
He was called "Pop", and I remember him as a very thin man, smoking rollies, sitting in front of the raido in the kitchen at Barcaldine listening to the Pailimenteriens. Heaven forbid if you tried to talk to him whilst he was listening. I will remember him as a caring, gently, quiet spoken man. He loved all his grandchildren very much.
