About

Occupation: Knife cleaning machine maker.
Information about George Monk is from Ronald Fisher, it is as follows:

George Charles Monk died of T.B. (Tuberculosis) in 1908 which left his wife, Mary Ann destitute, so i think a benifit was aranged , by a Mr. Hewit, this is what was found ?

"After making enquires into this case in which the applicant was Mr. Hewitt, 185 King Street, Hammersmith, one of our officers reported as follows:

The father, George Charles Monk, was a knife cleaning machine maker, earning usually 30s. a week, but owing to ill health only 20s. a week during the last two years of his life. He died suddenly from consumption and hemorrhage on teh 26th January, 1908, at Hammersmith. The mother received 12 pounds insurance money, but was otherwise left destitute, and a benefit concert was arranged by the applicant and Mr. Hone, Jeweller, 181 King Street, Hammersmith, who had long known her. The total amount raised or collected was about 40 pounds, which was placed in the hands of these gentlemen. After paying certain debts, they proceeded to allow the mother 10s. a week, and are still doing so, teh balance in hand being now about 27 pounds. The mother earns 5s. a week by needlework and receives from her three older children a total of 25s. weekly for board and lodging. Her rent is 6s 6d. a week. There were five younger children and the mother expects to be again confined in September.
the mother declined to sign the Canadian clauses of our agreement and in the circumstances it was decided to strike? them out.
Both girls are healthy.
