Afrikaans

(English intended to follow below. If someone would help to translate that would be very much appreciated.) [I have translated, and added below except for the couple of words I don't know.]

Dinge om aan te dink...

Wat nog?

Haai Jy!! Pas op die albasters! Dink so bietjie voor jy sommer dwarsdeur ons speletjie loop..

  • Geni gaan oor 1 boom. Nie 2 of 3 of 1000 bome nie.
  • As JOU boom nie reg is nie, is MY boom nie reg nie.

Party wil net verjaarsdae notification kry. Sommige is oorlede.

Verloor ek bestuur van my profiele? Selfs wat van my sekuriteit. TIP: As dit jou probleem of vrae is. Die antwoord is hou jou navorsing in jou eie databasis. Daar is verskeie programme daarvoor ontwerp is.

Prioriteite

- Geskiedenis en Fases van die groter boom.

Gedoen:

  • Eerste merges (2007)
  • Eerste 300 stamboom saamwerk merges - Merge MAYHEM (2007-2010)

In proses:

    • Voltooi tree conflicts (Jan 2011 - Apr 2012)
      • *Identifiseer die stamouers. (Dec 2010->>
    • Voeg de Villiers PAMA nommers by vir boom toppe (Dec 2010->>
    • VOLTOOI DIE LINKS 1600 - 1800's. (Jan 2011->>

Watch this space..

Vele hande maak ligte werk.

Persoonlike Fases:

  • Saamwerk in die begin.
  • Link aan die boom.
  • Kry jouself ingemerge
  • Newbies

After all, hulle is familie en ja glo dit as jy wil, Afrikaners is pliesierig ;-)

  • What else?

“Hey You! Watch out for the marbles!” Think a bit before you just run through our game ..

  • Geni is about a tree. Not 2 or 3 or 1000 trees. A tree. ONE profile per person who lives or has ever lived.
  • If your tree is not right, my tree is not right.
  • The easiest way to get your tree right is by having more people work together (collaborate).
  • Anyone who participates in this project would like to help where they can. Just ask us if you’re looking for help on how things work ...
  • We "old geni's" no longer have our own data. Our data is yours. We give you free access to our profiles, information, assistance, time and share our hard work and knowledge alike. All we ask in exchange is your careful work. Let's talk our differences out, and discuss why we do certain things as we do.
  • Be careful with OUR tree. Yes, our tree is probably wrong and yours right. But we make sure and make up the RIGHT tree based on who has the best and most reliable sources. Even the best research data will never be 100% reliable and be right.

Everyone makes mistakes. Take into account, the less we waste other's time, the more time we collectively available for a better tree to build. You're wasting people's time the most by:

  • Not accepting collaboration requests from someone who works in your part of the tree
  • Taking months to complete merge requests
  • Having profiles in your tree beyond two or three generations back that are set as Private or as erroneously ‘alive’ .
  • Pay attention to the data on SV / PROG (Stam Vader/ Moeder/ Progenitor) profiles. If we all work together for our tree in the same mindset, it reduces the number of profile updates that have to be done.

Hint: It's easier for everyone to get management of a profile by requesting management instead of adding a duplicate profile and merging it.

Background

As computer systems everywhere have developed along a learning curve, so it was with Geni, and so it will probably be for years to come. So Geni did not initially understand the science of geneology very well – getting the networking part in the Facebook era rather better. But they are well managed, and offer an easily operated and powerful "tree view". Also something that only improves over time.

At one stage in the early days it is estimated that about 200 South Africans started to build their family trees on Geni. First one here and then a link there to another place (there were no matches) and so you made contact and tried and find out if the other person would consider a merge ...

Some people had many years of data for research. As now, there were also those with less and others with more accurate data. Quite a few Gurus in the pedigree world played along. Some may still be, but they are there and it was a privilege and honor to have their participation. We all benefit from it.

People were also more or less interested in their pedigrees. Many just want to see their place in the tree for posterity, never afterwards wanting or needing to see it again. Many who come to geni begin their own serious research and are still growing and learning about the science of genealogy. Some just want to get birthday notifications. Some have died.

The concept of collaboration and merges is quite difficult to understand in a world where your data is so valuable and obtained bit by bit with difficulty and hard work. There are those who think they have good enough data, and then there are those that process document by document, with every detail carefully researched. Yes even writing and rewriting books about who was who amongst our ancestors.

It is likely that these concepts are still difficult for new people, as with everything where you don’the know what to expect. What will happen to my data? What about other people's dates? Will it change mine when I merge a profile with another? Will I lose management on my profiles? And what about my security? TIP: If these are your problems or questions. The answer is for you to do research in your own database. There are several programs designed for it. Geni is not designed for single user use - but in fact has collaboration as its basis.

Then there are those who just want their own thing and to build their own family tree to build and they really object at the idea of sharing it. This page is an invitation and reminder to them that Afrikaners are fun and then they become so ... Come build together and work together on one of the most aangryplike (gripping?) projects and the rewriting of the history of mankind. "Solving geneology" ... the concept has developed into a genealogical 'wikipedia'.

The piece has a lot of work needed .. but it's a start ;-)
