Barretto Family of the Philippines

The surname Barretto has Portuguese origins and is likely an occupational name for a cap maker, from a variant of barrette ‘cap’. It is used in many Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries and India, where colonists propagated it. This surname was included in the alphabetical catalog accompanying the Claveria Decree of 1849, requiring Filipinos to "select" new last names.
