It is an artillery fortress located near the village of Blackness on the south shore of the Firth of Forth. It has been crown property since 1453, when it passed to King James II of Scotland and became one of the main residences of the Scottish monarch. In the mid-16th century, the castle was fortified and became one of the most advanced fortresses in Scotland. A century later, it fell to Oliver Cromwell's army and was damaged in the siege. Later it was repaired and went on to serve as a prison and a minor garrison. Today the castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of Historic Scotland. It has been featured in several film productions in recent years, most notably in Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet (1990) starring Mel Gibson.

  • Linlithgow Palace ❊ - Birth place of Mary, Queen of Scots in December 1542 and occasionally stayed there during her reign. The ruins are situated in the town of Linlithgow, West Lothian (was Linlithgowshire). The palace was one of the principal residences of the monarchs of Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries, little used after Scotland's monarchs left for England in 1603 after the Union of the Crowns. It was burned out in 1746. There was a Royal Manor on the site in the 12th Century which was replaced by a fortification known as "The Peel" in the 14th Century, built by Edward I's forces, beginning in 1302, supervised by 2 priests, Richard de Wynepol and Henry de Graundeston. After the town of Linlithgow was partially destroyed in a great fire in 1424 started the Palace was rebuilt as a grand residence for Scottish royalty by King James I. The palace developed into a formal courtyard structure, with significant additions by James III and James IV and James V who was born in the palace in April 1512. The daughter of James VI, Elizabeth of Bohemia, lived in the Palace. In 1607 the old North range collapsed and King James had it rebuilt between 1618 and 1622. The only reigning monarch to stay at Linlithgow afterwards was King Charles I who spent a night there in 1633. In 1648 part of the new North range was occupied by the Alexander Livingston, 1st Earl of Linlithgow. In September 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie visited Linlithgow on his march south but did not stay overnight. prince William, Duke of Cumberland's army destroyed/burnt most of the palace buildings in January 1746. The official keepers and captains of the palace have been held by;
  • James Hamilton of Finnart, 1534, Captain and Keeper;
  • William Danielstoun from 19 November 1540;
  • Andrew Hamilton in Briggis, from 22 August 1543;
  • Andrew Melville of Murdocairney, later Lord Melville of Monimail, brother of James Melville of Halhill, from 15 February 1567;
  • George Boyd, deputy Captain, 1564;
  • Andrew Ferrier, Captain of the Palace, 1565, Frenchman;
  • John Brown, June 1569;
  • Andrew Lambie, June 1571;
  • Ludovic Bellenden of Auchnoul 22 November 1587.
