Project Objectives

Where there is record of someone being in the Cape who is not represented on a shipping list we will in the process of this project look to see if they are possible to identify how and when they could have arrived...

HASSELT (870)

  • Moker, Jakob Hendriksz.
  • 10-04-1657 Vlie
  • 16-08-1657 Cape

Sailed into Table Bay with the first cargo of slaves for this country, namely 174 Angolese on board. At the Council meeting of 8 May 1658 it was minuted that the Hasselt had anchored two days earlier with 228 slave men and women on board. Of this group 43 slaves who were all traded at Popo (earlier called Arder, now known as Lagos ) died during the voyage.

The Council decided that the Hasselt should set sail for Batavia “en daarmee af te senden een getal van 140 a 150 stucx slaven” [and to send between 140 and 150 slaves (to Batavia )].

At the meeting of 30 May 1658 it was noted that the Company had to feed 200 slaves per day. On 28 August 1658 the Councillors learnt about the slaves from Guinea and Angola who had absconded. At the Council meeting of 26 October 1678 it was recorded that the slaves traded on Madagascar would be transported immediately to the west coast of Sumatra . This type of reporting occurs throughout the Resolutions up to the end of the VOC rule at the Cape of Good Hope.

1795

THE MEERMIN left Batavia & arrived at the Cape in 1795

Captain: Gerard Ewoud Overbeek

On 18-05-1795 the MEERMIN originally departed from the Cape for the Nerherlands in a 16 ship VOC convoy, escorted by two war ships; a day later 8 ships had to return because of adverse wind. When they sailed out again they were intercepted by English ships who had heard the news that France had overrun the Netherlands. The MEERMIN and 6 other VOC ships (including Alblasserdam; Mentor; Dordwijk ) were captured with no loss of life by the English off St. Helena and taken to Shannon in Ireland. Full story of the Meermin’s capture at: [http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6953.]

After this, Capt Gerard Overbeek appears to have decided to settle in the Cape for good, marrying Alida Cornelia Brink These were the last days of the VOC, which collapsed into bankruptcy.
