Z'CHOR - REMEMBER, NEVER FORGET!

We mourn them and vow not to forget them. We are heirs to their horror, their heroism, their hopes. -Andre Ungar (adapted)

We mourn for millions of people, brutally destroyed by "civilized people" behaving like savages.

The blood of of the innocent who perished in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Treblinka, and Theresienstadt, cries out to humanity. -Morris Silverman (adapted)

I Stood With Abraham

Then I saw the night descend upon my people.

I saw them suffer as no people has ever suffered before.

I saw them burned and gassed and tortured.

Then, like the phoenix, I saw them rise again in the old land.

I saw them nurture saplings in the wilderness

And I watched them make the desert bloom.

They are bone of my bone,

Flesh of my flesh,

Soul of my people.

They are my people.

They will live within me

and I will live with them.

Forever.

Abba Hillel Silver (adapted – The New Mahzor, Prayer Book Press)

Yom HaShoah Ve-HaGevurah

Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG'vurah (יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה; "Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day"), known in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah (יום השואה) Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed as Israel's day of commemoration for the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust and for the Jewish resistance in that period.

The original proposal was to hold Yom HaShoah on the 14th of Nisan, the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising (April 19, 1943), but this was problematic because the 14th of Nisan is the day immediately before Pesach (Passover). The date was moved to the 27th of Nisan.

"Yom HaShoah is marked on the 27th day in the month of Nisan--a week after the seventh day of Passover, and a week before Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers).

The date was selected by the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) on April 12, 1951. The full name became formal in a law that was enacted by the Knesset on August 19, 1953. Although the date was established by the Israeli government, it has become a day commemorated by Jewish communities and individuals worldwide.

The Siren

Since the early 1960s, the sound of a siren on Yom Hashoah stops traffic and pedestrians throughout the State of Israel for two minutes of silent devotion. The siren blows at sundown and once again at 11:00 A.M. on this date. There is no public entertainment on Yom Hashoah, as theaters, cinemas, pubs, and other public venues are closed throughout Israel.
