המקור לשם בלום על פי בית התפוצות: לפני כ-550 שנים לערך, עם גרושם של היהודים מספרד, הגיעה קבוצת יהודים לגרמניה והתישבה באחת הערים. הם התישבו כקבוצה ובנו סביב מתחם בתיהם חומה ושער. על משקוף השער סיתת אחד מהם פרחים. בלכתם לטייל בעיר שאלו אותם האזרחים הותיקים לזהותם: מי אתם? היכן אתם גרים? ואלו אנו: אנחנו גרים בבית עם שער הפרחים. (blum= פרח בגרמנית). מאז נקראו בלום.
