'den Arend' is a Dutch name. 'Arend' means 'eagle' and the word 'den' is the Dutch article for 'the'. But according to a research by Elias den Arend from San Jose, California, the name came from the Spanish 'don Ariendo', which Jewish family fled from the inquisition to the Low Countries in the fifteenth century. In Amsterdam they became diamond cutters. Part of the family became protestant.
He also discovered that their ancestors came from the area which is now Israel in 911.
