The name Wyeth came from the original surname Wythe.
The name is English in origin and means "living by a willow." The original progenitor of the Wythe/Wyeth family was Nicholas Wythe, b. Saxtead, Suffolk, Eng. We travelled to England in 2006 and visited the family town and church.
The Wythe family started using Wyeth as a derivative and family members interchangably used boh spellings; sometimes from son to father in mail during the Civil War the son addressed mail to "Wythe" while signing as "Wyeth". We have in our possesion several original family letters where this occured.
The willow tree is engraved on the tombstones of the Wyeth family buried in Riley, IN. goto: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=wyeth&GSiman=1&GScid=85912&GRid=18997532&
