Anton Hansen Tammsaare

Today marks the 135th birthday of Estonian writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare. Born on January 30, 1878 in Albu, Estonia, Tammsaare came from a poor farming background and became one of the most important figures in Estonian literature. His most famous publication, Truth and Justice, a pentalogy chronicling the evolution of Estonian society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is considered to be one of the major works of Estonian literature. Today, many refer to it as “The Estonian Novel.”
