Profile of the Day: Benjamin Harrison

Benjamin Harrison

On this day in 1833, Benjamin Harrison was born in North Blend, Ohio. Harrison served as the 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893.

Harrison was born on August 20, 1833 to John Harrelson and Elizabeth Irwin in North Bed, Ohio. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the 9th President of the United States and first governor of the Indiana Territory. Harrison was seven years old when his grandfather was elected president. His grandfather would serve for only 31 days before dying of pneumonia. His great grandfather, Benjamin Harrison V, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and later succeeded Thomas Jefferson as governor of Virginia.

Like his ancestors before him, Harrison entered the world of politics. In 1889, Harrison was elected the 23rd President of the United States. During his presidency, Harrison worked to expand the nation’s influence abroad. Harrison would serve only one term as president after losing the 1892 election to Grover Cleveland. During his reelection campaign, Harrison’s wife struggled with tuberculosis and passed a couple of weeks before the election.

After leaving the White House, Harrison returned to practicing law. He died of pneumonia on March 13, 1901 at the age of 67.
